DASH diet that can prevent you from gout and blood pressure, confirms study

Fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products are good for health and experts recommend to include these regularly in your diet. Now you have another reason to eat fruits and vegetables as the can help gout sufferers. In the new find, researchers have revealed that healthy diet can lower blood levels of uric acid which is known to trigger gout.

It has been long known that diet plays a major role in determining the levels of blood uric acid. However, there were no clinical trials yet to confirm it. Also, there is no evidence that proves that particular type of food habit can prevent gout.
Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, state that Dietary Approaches To Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet that includes high amount of fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy foods and neglects saturated fat and cholesterol; has the potential to lower levels of uric acid and blood pressure.

For the study, researchers involved 103 adults. Each of the participant was given either DASH diet or normal diet for 30 days. It was found that DASH diet led to lowering of levels of uric acid by 0.35 mg/dl on average while patients suffering from gout witnessed a fall of >1 mg/dL in uric acid levels. In general, uric acid levels are >7 mg/dL in individuals. Thus, DASH diet can prevent patients with gout.

“Physicians may now confidently recommend the DASH diet to patients with gout in order to lower uric acid levels,’ explains Stephen P. Juraschek. “That’s a large reduction in uric acid”. He further added, “When you get as high as the reduction we believe occurred with the original DASH diet in this study, the effect starts being comparable with gout medications.”

The study appeared in the Arthritis & Rheumatology, a journal of the American College of Rheumatology.
