60% breast cancer cases in Hyderabad diagnosed in advanced stage

HYDERABAD: Despite the growing awareness about breast cancer, 60-70 percent of the cases recorded in the city continue to be diagnosed in the advanced stages say experts. This mostly happens due to the lack of awareness about breast health. While there are many `early signs' of breast cancer, as per a nationwide study conducted recently on breast awareness, only 42 percent of women surveyed in the city were found to be confident about identifying changes in their breast. Majority respondents thought that a lump on the breast is the only sign of breast cancer.
The survey , conducted across the country by Avon India had19,000 respondents, also found that 30 percent of the women respondents said that they were not aware that changes in their breasts could be a cause for concern. "There is also low awareness of some of the important lifestyle factors that could prevent breast cancer, with almost two-thirds of respondents being unaware that exercise could help lower the risk of developing breast cancer. Similarly , 63 percent of respondents did not know that alcohol consumption is linked to a higher risk of breast cancer," read the survey report.
Experts point out that being aware about changes in the breast is very important."Being breast aware is about becoming familiar with breasts and the way they change throughout your life. It means knowing how the breasts look and feel normally , so that one feels feel confident about noticing any change," pointed out Dr P Raghu Ram, director, KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases, Hyderabad and president Association of Breast Surgeons of India.
