TIRUPATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the five-day annual Indian Science Congress at the Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati today.

Are scientists responsible for communicating their work to the general public?

Though some scientists attempt to communicate science in workshops and outreach programmes, it need not be considered their duty to do so, says Prof. Desiraju.Photo: P.V. SivakumarP_V_SIVAKUMAR

After getting totally frustrated in a Twitter exchange (@GautamDesiraju) on this question, I decided to put my thoughts down in the more conventional form of an article, a means of communication with which scientists are far more comfortable. One of my Twitter followers even said that one cannot say much in 140 characters, and this matter needs a bit more than that.

Kakodkar for eco-friendly transport

Kakodkar, with other scientists and researchers, unveiled 'Transport Vision 2035', a document that outlines the technology road map for transportation — road, rail, air, and water.

"Many things in our country are vendor-driven," Kakodkar said, adding that this can trigger illogical technology development. "The personalized passenger vehicle has seen exponential growth in recent years, far in excess of the capacity of our roads. While this happened, we seem to have neglected mass transportation, which is such an important thing. The burden on our infrastructure would not have happened if the latter was catered to," he explained.
