As Anna Hazare continues stir in Delhi, his village people stage a ‘Sholay’ style protest

As Anna Hazare, a resident of Ralegan Siddhi village, continued his indefinite strike in Delhi, people in the village climbed atop a water tank much like actor Dharmendra’s character in Sholay, to support the social activist’s demands.

A group of residents of the village, located in Parner tehsil of Ahmednagar district, climbed atop the water tank, and shouted slogans demanding the acceptance of Mr. Hazare’s demands, which include the appointment of a Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in States.

Some protesters were carrying the national flag, and they threatened to jump off the tank if their demands were not accepted, an aide of the activist said. Mr. Hazare began his hunger strike at the Ramlila Maidan on March 23.
Maharashtra Minister Girish Mahajan on Monday met him at the venue to discuss his demands. Mr. Hazare’s 2011 agitation in Delhi led to the passing of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act 2013, but the Centre is yet to appoint a Lokpal.

This time, Anna Hazare is also demanding that the government address the agrarian distress and ensure better minimum support price for farmers’ agricultural produce.
