Ranbir Kapoor: The evolution of Bollywood’s most sought-after heartthrob

An innocent-looking, towel-hugging Ranbir Kapoor made his debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Saawariya’ in 2007, which unfortunately bombed at the box office. Cut to a decade later, Ranbir Kapoor has become the RANBIR KAPOOR of Bollywood and one can easily say that he is one of the most talented and sought-after actors. So how did it happen? If one sits down and observes carefully, it is easy to notice that in his younger days, Ranbir was not even close to the full-bloomed, aura-inspiring personality that he is now. On the Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani actor’s 35th birthday, here’s how this talented star kid became a Bollywood A-lister!
Wake Up Sid
After failing miserably with his debut film, Ranbir’s first hit came in the form of ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’. But it was not until Ayan Mukerji’s Wake Up Sid that we saw Ranbir essay an extraordinary yet relatable role of a boy-next-door as Sidharth Mehra, a lot of more of which were to follow.

One can easily say that Ranbir’s career actually took off when he collaborated with Imtiaz Ali for the first time, which happened in 2011 with Rockstar. Though, Ranbir Kapoor’s character also stood out in Zoya Akhtar’s absorbing coming-of-age story ‘Wake Up Sid’, I think Ranbir’s vivid portrayal of Jordan is what his career actually needed. And that juxtaposed to Nargis Fakhri’s debutante acting skills became an eye-opener for movie buffs to the sheer talent that this Kapoor son had.
Even though ‘Rockstar’ received mixed reviews from critics, one thing was sure, Ranbir was here to stay. Not only was Rockstar responsible for introducing Ranbir’s image as an ‘actor’ but we also saw Ranbir’s character grow humungously in the duration of the film itself, from Janardhan to Jordan.
And Anurag Basu’s 2012 film, Barfi! was no different. Playing a deaf and dumb guy Murphy Johnson in the film, Ranbir was able to garner legions of fans who now looked out for him. Wowing everyone with his skills, Ranbir alongside Priyanka Chopra weaved nothing less than magic on screen.
Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani
This second collaboration between Ayan and Ranbir came at a time (2013) when we millennials were busy figuring out what our hearts really wanted, our passion. And Kabir or Bunny Thapar was facing the exact same choice in ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’. From giving us travel goals, to work goals, to relationship goals, this Deepika Padukone-Ranbir Kapoor starrer made us fall in love with their characters just effortlessly.
This Imtiaz Ali directorial brought back the much-loved chemistry between Deepika and Ranbir, but that was not the USP of the film. Ranbir’s edgy character in ‘Tamasha’, Ved was easily one of the most layered characters that Ranbir had essayed till then. In Tamasha, we saw Ranbir merge two poles apart characters in one — a geeky 9 to 5 worker Ved and a profound but suffocated artist Don.
Ranbir may be a Kapoor but he is not one that has found his place in the industry because of his legacy. And rather, his exceptional repertoire speaks for itself. He is a director’s actor. And that is what has helped him survive nearly a decade as a top-notch actor in the industry. Be it with Imtiaz Ali or Anurag Basu, Ranbir’s characters have formed a special place in our hearts. Here’s wishing the 35-year-old a very happy birthday!
