Western Rly has continued with its transportation of essential commodities through its parcel special trains and goods trains. WRhas left no stone unturned to keep the chain of supply moving. This is evident from the fact that despite toughest challenges during lockdown, WRhas transported goods in more than 16 thousand rakes of goods trains . This could be made possible only through the concerted efforts of the officers and staff of Western Railway.
According to a press release issued byShri Sumit Thakur- Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Rly, since 22nd March, 2020, total 16,152 rakes of goods trains were loaded till26thSept, 2020 over Western Rly. The revenue through this loading has been approx. Rs 4272 crore. Loading in the 16,152 rakes included various essential commodities such as POL – 1685, Fertilizers – 3028, Salt – 848, Foodgrain- 152, Cement – 1410, Coal – 561, Containers – 7368& General Goods – 70 rakes, totaling to33.91 Million Tonnes. In addition to this, Millennium parcel rakes, including milk rakes carrying essential commodities such as medicine, frozen food, milk powder,liquid milk and general consumer goods were also transported, mainly to Northern & North East regions.Total 31,694 Freight trains were interchanged with other Railways, including 15,841trains handed over and 15,853 trains taken over at different interchange points of Western Railway. During the period, important inward rakes such as 2070 rakes of Jumbo, 1013 rakes of BOXN and 912 rakes of BTPN were unloaded at various stations over Western Rly,despite shortage of labourers. Shri Thakur further stated that, in addition to the above goods traffic, since 23rd March to 26th Sept, 2020, commodities weighing more than 1.35 lakh tonnes have been transported by Western Rly through its 568 parcel special trains, which mainly included agricultural produce, medicines, fish, milk etc. The earnings generated through this transportation, has been above Rs 45.23 crore. During this period, 95 milk special trains were run by Western Rly, with a load of approx. 72 thousand tonnes and 100% utilization of the wagons. Similarly, 429 Covid-19 special parcel trains with a load of approx. 43 thousandtonnes were also run to transport various essential commodities. In addition to this, 44 indented rakes carrying about 20 thousand tonnes were also run with almost 100% utilization.WR has scheduled to run various timetabled Parcel special trains during lockdown period to different parts of the country. one Parcel Special train viz Okha to Guwahati departed from WR on 27thSept, 2020.
Shri Thakur added that at present all the time tabled parcel special train are running with single SLR. The punctuality at times gets affected, due to the reversal at some stations. To improve punctuality, it has been decided to run the parcel special trains with SLRs on both sides with immediate effect. Also, Train No 00949/50 Okha- New Guwahati Parcel Special train will now originate/terminate from Guwahati instead of New Guwahati with immediate effect. This decision has been taken by the railways since maximum number of parcel vans in the rakes are meant for Guwahati only. Train No 00949/50 Okha-Guwahati will now depart from Guwahati at 20.30 hrs and in its return trip from Okha, will reach Guwahati at 23.00 hrs, as per its revised schedule.
LOSS OF PASSENGER EARNINGS DUE TO LOCKDOWN
The total loss of earnings over Western Railway on account of Corona Virus, has been approx.Rs 2727 crore, which includes Rs 415 crore for suburban section and Rs 2312 crore for non-suburban. In spite of this, resulting to cancellation of tickets since 1st March, 2020 till 26thSept, 2020, Western Railway has ensured torefundmore than Rs. 435 crore. It’s worth mentioning that in this refund amount, Mumbai division alone, has ensured refund of more than Rs 210.56 crore. Till now, 67.61 lakh passengers have cancelled their tickets over entire Western Railway & have received their refund amount accordingly.
